Ways to start reading

Depending on what you are doing, one of these will be the most natural:

Click Play (or press F7)
The simplest method — Readable speaks from your cursor or selection. F7 is also a stop toggle.
Hover Read
Hold Ctrl and move the mouse over text. Reads what your mouse is pointing at — one word at a time by default. Switch the Hover dropdown to Line, Block or Document Read for more on each hover.
Ctrl+Space — Read to end
Reads from the mouse pointer to the end of the document.
Speak on Select
The moment you finish selecting text — by mouse drag or Shift+arrow keys — Readable starts speaking it. No button press required. Toggle on/off in Settings → Speech.
Text Extractor
Drag a rectangle around any region of the screen — Readable OCRs and reads what it finds, even from images and locked apps.

The side buttons of a 6-button mouse can also be mapped to common reading actions — see Speak Text with 6-button mouse under Hover Read Modes.

Stopping speech

Press Ctrl at any time, press F7 again (it toggles), or click the Stop button on the toolbar. See Stop Speech for the complete list of methods.
