Readable can use any voice installed on your Mac.
- Open Settings and go to the Speech tab.
- Choose a voice from the Voice list. Each voice shows its language, for example (en-GB). System default uses your Mac’s own spoken-content voice.
- Click Test voice: “The quick brown fox.” to hear it.
Rate, pitch and volume
- Rate
- 0.5× to 2.0× normal speed.
- Pitch
- 0.5 to 2.0.
- Volume
- 0 to 100%.
These sliders work with Apple’s voices. Some voices from other providers set their own speed, pitch and volume; when one of those is chosen, the sliders are greyed out and Readable tells you so.
Adding more voices
Extra voices are added through macOS, in System Settings → Accessibility:
- macOS 26 Tahoe: under Speech, open Live Speech, click the information button next to Voice and download the voices you want.
- macOS 14 Sonoma and macOS 15 Sequoia: open Spoken Content, then choose Manage Voices… from the System voice menu.
Voices you download are available to every app on your Mac. Quit and reopen Readable so the new voices appear in its list.
