Readable Notes works with macOS inline predictive text — a system-wide feature available in macOS Sonoma (14) and later that suggests words and phrases as you type, helping to speed up writing and reduce errors.
How macOS prediction looks
Unlike floating prediction bars on other platforms, macOS prediction appears as greyed-out text that extends inline from your cursor as you type. You see the suggestion right where you are writing — no separate bar or popup.
When macOS has a suggestion, the grey predicted text appears. If it's what you want, press Space (or Tab or Return) to accept it and move on. If you'd rather not use it, simply keep typing and the suggestion disappears automatically — there's nothing to dismiss.
Enabling word prediction on Mac
- Open System Settings from the Apple menu.
- Click Keyboard.
- Under Text Input, click the Edit… button next to your input source.
- In the panel that appears, turn on Show inline predictive text.
- Click Done. Start typing in Readable Notes and predictions will appear as you type.
Accepting and dismissing predictions
- Accept — press the Space bar (the most natural way), or press Tab or Return.
- Dismiss — just keep typing. The grey suggestion disappears as soon as you type the next character.
- Ignore — if you type fast enough that you've already passed the suggestion, macOS simply moves on. There's no interruption.
Readable Notes and prediction
When word prediction is active, Readable Notes can speak the text you've just accepted, giving you audio confirmation of what was entered without needing to look at the screen. This is particularly helpful for users who rely on text-to-speech alongside their typing.
